Southern Sweden is a place of inspiration and renewal. The unspoiled nature, clear air, and gentle light create ideal conditions for a life in harmony with nature, away from the hustle and bustle.
We are Meike and Marcus, and we have built, renovated, and lived in this house ourselves to German standards for 16 years, without any other rental.
Meike and Marcus
With a heavy heart, we are parting from our gem near Holsljunga (Municipality of Svenljunga, Province of Västra Götaland). Just 250m away, the large lake Holsjön invites you to swim and linger.
Large Sun Terrace
The property, with easy-to-maintain 1000 m², is in a solitary location, surrounded by an adjacent forest, and only this house can be accessed via a driveway.
Nevertheless, the transport connections are good; the main road 154 is nearby, with a bus stop 250m away, from where you can reach places like Svenljunga, Ullared, Gothenburg.
All Alone in the Countryside
The house is built in a bungalow style, has approximately 90 m², and there is a small basement as well as a crawl space.
Five years ago, the entire roof was re-covered, and all windows were replaced with high-quality Schüco windows. The house was completely renovated three years ago.

So, the sport, golf, is really cheap in Sweden.
In Sweden, tropical fruits are expensive.
Everything that has to travel a long way to Sweden is expensive.
Of course, it always depends on the crown’s exchange rate.
Currently, the crown isn’t doing so well, and petrol only costs 1.21 euros.
We have a lake view through the trees, it’s a bit like looking through a small curtain.
In the evening, it’s very nice when the sun reflects in the lake, especially around Midsummer.
During Midsummer, it’s particularly beautiful, the entire horizon sparkles, it’s really amazing.
And it was very amusing with the lake view.
Then we drove back to Germany.
I mean, where do you find such neighbours? It was just magical.
Yes, my passion, or our passion, also my husband’s passion, is playing golf.
But we are a bit of a different kind of golfer, playing golf in jeans, quite casually and relaxed.
And Sweden is the golf country.
In Sweden, you play golf, football, and then you go fishing, in that order.
Oh, they also do some grilling now and then.
But basically, they primarily play golf, and Sweden has produced quite a lot of golfers.
And our house is located in an area where there are many golf courses.
Everything is really included.
There are high mountains, flat and level, all very different.
So you can say, what do I feel like doing today? Do I want to do a bit of climbing?
In Hestra, there is a golf course on the mountain.
On the other side is the ski slope and on the other side of the mountain is the golf course.
I do not recommend going over 21 degrees.
You get so hot, it’s unbearable.
Yes, it is truly a dream playing golf.
And also, the people who play golf are totally relaxed.
I play at our favourite golf club in Kinds, which is about 18 kilometres away from us.
There is always the veteran golf on Tuesday mornings, and only older gentlemen come.
And then about 100 people gather.
100 people come to play golf, 100 older gentlemen come to play golf.
There are similar events for older ladies, but they do not bring their golf carts.
Yes, it really is fun to play golf.
And right next to the house, there is a small path.
So there was a narrow-gauge railway.
And the Swedes decided to convert this old railway line into a bike path.
A mountain bike trail branches off from there.
It’s a bit of a ride, one must warm up.
A mountain bike trail right by the lake.
Trekking is also, no worries at all.
The Ätran is a fantastic river for kayaking.
And as I said, fishing on the lake.
Swimming is definitely a given.
And in winter, there is ice fishing and ice skating or playing ice hockey.
These are the things you can actively do in Sweden.
And if someone wants, they can play football directly in Holsljunga.
In Holsljunga, a really small village, but it has a football pitch that has heating under the grass.
Since we have our own well, we naturally have no expenses when it comes to water.
So there is a wonderfully beautiful zoo in Borås.
I’m not usually in favour of caged animals, but there is a beautiful zoo in Borås.
Nearby, around the corner, there is a huge children’s fun water park.
I haven’t been there, because I’ve outgrown the age where I need to go down slides.
But it’s for children, Sweden is generally very child-friendly.
They do a lot for children, and yes, our house is pretty much at ground level.
This means, you don’t have to climb stairs to get anywhere.
We have built it a bit age-appropriately.
A very slight step into the house.
Now I’ve lost my train of thought.
Now you have to edit it out, Olli, you have to edit that out.
Exactly, everything is so convenient to walk around.
Yes, we are selling the house because our life circumstances have changed.
We originally built this house for ourselves.
We never thought that we would sell the house one day.
That’s how it is now, and I really hope someone feels as comfortable there as we did.
So, for us, Sweden was always homecoming.
That was really a place of longing, with just a super pleasant climate.
The great advantage is, of course, we can turn the heating on online here.
We then drive up and come to a cozy warm house.
That’s really great, even in the deepest winter.
So, it can be used as a holiday home, but it is also built as somewhere we can live in every day.
That was simply important to us, and that’s why we had our own well drilled.
It has always been, always, always important for us to be independent.
That’s why we have a wood stove as well.
There’s plenty of wood available in Sweden, so we don’t have to worry about that.
A 70-metre deep well for really clear water in complete independence.
We’ve also started with solar panels on the carport roof, and these can be expanded at any time.
So that’s our plan for autarky.
I have also planned to build a greenhouse for the future.
Old windows are already in the cellar.
And I originally wanted to attach a sauna to this greenhouse.
So, the moose are scared of us; as soon as you shut the car door or something, they’re gone.
They know exactly when hunting season begins.
And then they go deep into the forest, and you do not see them anymore.
Aha, you’re saying go when it starts? Yes, let’s go.
Tell me, how did you come to buy a house in southern Sweden?
And the solar system currently provides hot water.
But we always have warmth, always enough water, always enough wood.
That’s really, I think, very, very important for the future too, to keep an eye on that.
And if you get along well with your neighbour, you might even get an moose steak over the fence.
By the way, the moose sometimes sleeps in the garden and under the apple tree.
Sometimes also with calves in spring; it’s truly magical to see.
But when the moose are there, that’s really dreamy.
Yes, our Holsjön, our lake, is 100 meters in a straight line.
We don’t need much wood; I don’t actually know how many cubic meters we have up there.
I have a 2.8 cm thick solid wood floor, made of pine.
Yes, we have oriented the house so that self-sufficient living there is indeed possible.
What’s also entirely possible is to build a guest cabin.
Everyone has a guest cabin on their property.
And then you can build a lovely guest cabin down on the property.
The water warms up relatively quickly when it’s warm outside because the lake is very shallow.
Yes, Swedes, when they are not playing golf, fishing, hiking, or roaming around the lake,
then you find them in the forest in autumn, where they collect mushrooms.
It’s a great experience and you often can’t stop because there are more and more.
But important: always leave one or two mushrooms to ensure we have some for next year.
There is a nice custom in Sweden during Easter.
Instead of hanging eggs on bushes and trees, you hang feathers on them.
What the feathers actually signify, I still haven’t figured out, but you simply hang feathers,
coloured feathers fluttering in the wind, on the trees.
Yes, and it goes bang on New Year’s Eve because the winter spirits are sent away.
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is another great idea for the lake.
So the lake is not very deep; therefore, there isn’t much of a swell even when it’s windy,
The bike path starts right outside the door.
Once to the left, once to the right, however you like.
The Swedes started converting their old railway lines into bike paths some time ago.
And we have this little house right next to an old narrow-gauge railway.
And there’s a bike path going left there.
Now, it’s not busy all the time.
So if you see five cyclists in the summer in a day, that’s a lot.
Not that you think: "Oh gosh, oh gosh, oh gosh." It’s not worth opening an ice cream stand.
And these paths are really beautiful.
You can do it however you like.
The straight paths, level paths, or a bit more hilly, into the mountain biking area,
In the winter dream, in the winter dream.
In the basement, there are still two Fischer Cross-country skis, which belong to the house.
By the way, it’s also great using cross-country skis on the lake.
You can take your fishing gear with you, your ice fishing gear.
The fishing rod is really short.
You can strap it to your back.
Ulricehamn has a downhill skiing area as well.
It’s really worth going there if you feel like downhill skiing.
And there are also cross-country skiing tracks, that are even lit at night.
It’s incredible; they’re really lit up until late at night, and if you feel like it,
you can still go for a round of cross-country skiing in the evening.
